The day has finally come! Tomorrow night, Hollywood will gather to honour the best in film from 2017 during the 90th Annual Academy Awards ceremony. So, as promised, I am here to give my picks for this years Oscars. This is a bit of a combo, as I took into account who I think will win, as well as who I think should win. I will only be giving predictions on the categories where I have scene the majority of the films in the category, so some categories will be skipped. Without further ado, let's get under way.
Best Visual Effects: "War for the Planet of the Apes"
The "Apes" series has really stepped-up motion capture, having a mo-cap lead character, and I believe the final installment will be the one to finally take home an Oscar.
Best Film Editing: "Baby Driver"
As I said in my Oscar Nom's reaction, Baby Driver is not a good film without its superb editing. Therefore, this by default should win. Keep your eyes on Dunkirk as a dark horse.
Best Costume Design: "Beauty and the Beast"
Best Makeup & Hairstyling: "Darkest Hour"
Gary Oldman, a skinny gentleman, looked as if he gained a massive amount to play Winston Churchill. He was unrecognizable. The makeup team deserves the win.
Best Cinematography: "Blade Runner 2049"
Roger Deakins camera-work was absolutely stunning in the "Blade Runner" sequel, and contributed a lot to critics praise of the film. While "The Shape of Water" may steal this one, my money is on Deakins.
Best Production Design: "The Shape of Water"
Best Sound Mixing/Best Sound Editing: "Baby Driver"
Again, "Baby Driver" relies wholly on the music in conjunction with the scenes to work - and it works wonderfully. I hope the Academy recognizes that with these two awards.
Best Original Score: "Star Wars: The Last Jedi"
In my humble opinion, I believe "TLJ" is John Williams best work ever - not just Star Wars, ever. The infusion of old, nostalgic classics and new, instant classics puts the film over the top. I see the Academy giving this one to Williams as a career award, since the revolutionary artist is beginning to wind down.
Best Adapted Screenplay: "Call Me by Your Name"
As much as I would love for "Logan" to win this one, I figure "Call Me by Your Name" will pick up the nod as it is the only film in this category to be nominated for Best Picture.
Best Original Screenplay: "Get Out"
This is the award I see the Academy giving to "Get Out" for its moment in the spotlight. A truly original screenplay, Jordan Peele deserves this one all the way.
Best Supporting Actress: Allison Janney in "I, Tonya"
Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell in "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri"
An absolute revelation, Sam Rockwell (Mr. Under Appreciated) was a total shock in this film, totally convincing audiences he was a disgusting redneck racist who was simultaneously sympathetic. Excellent acting, and really the only stand-out in this category.
Best Actress: Frances McDormand in "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri"
What an effort. The performance of the year, McDormand is both heart-achingly sad while being incredibly light and fun. Some killer monologues help me to pick McDormand as the rightful Best Actress this year.
Best Actor: Gary Oldman in "Darkest Hour"
The Oscars love a good biopic, and Gary Oldman's entrancing performance should earn him the nod on Sunday.
Best Director: Guillermo del Toro
"The Shape of Water" is total Oscar-bait, with the right level of drama and magical whimsy that earns hearts and minds like "La La Land" and "Shakespeare in Love" before it. del Toro's directing was excellent, and I see him walking away with this award regardless of the competition.
Best Picture: "The Shape of Water"
As I mentioned above, "The Shape of Water" does so many things right that it is the clear favourite in my estimation for Best Picture. While "Three Billboards" and "Dunkirk" may juuuust sneak in and take the award, I see "The Shape of Water" cashing in on its 9 nominations when it counts, walking out as the 2017 Best Picture.
