Glass - Trailer Review

M. Night Shyamalan stormed back onto the mainstage with 2017's Split. Out of no where, Shyamalan crafted a chilling psychological horror film that served as a secret sequel to 2000's superhero fair Unbreakable. Following the surprise success of Split, the final installment of the series was announced, Glass. At San Diego Comic-Con today, the first trailer for Glass was revealed, so I thought I would break down the trailer and give my quick thoughts.

First off, it is so cool to see Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis back as Mr. Glass and David Dunn. Unbreakable is such an underrated film, and I never would have guessed that we'd be seeing them back in those roles. Very cool.

My biggest question coming out of this trailer is how does David Dunn end up in the SAME institute that Glass and Kevin Wendell Crumb are in? When we last saw Dunn, he was sitting in a diner while Crumb was being arrested. Perhaps Dunn is jailed after the vigilante act we see him do at 1:13 in the trailer?

I am curious to see how Anya Taylor-Joy's Casey factors into this film. I felt like her story was complete following Split, while in this trailer we see her interacting with Crumb in his cell/room. I wonder if we will see Casey being a sort of Robin to David Dunn's Batman, helping him to defeat the villains. We get a line from Mr. Glass at 2:22 suggesting that Glass and Crumb will team up to cause havoc. This feels second act to me, setting up a final showdown for Dunn in the third act.

The aesthetic for this film looks pitch perfect. The purple hue in the mental institution indicates Glass is in control, and I expect him to be a master manipulator, setting in motion the film's plot.

January is usually a dead zone for films, but I will certainly be circling my calendar for January 18th. This trailer is worth a watch, giving some flavour as to what we can expect from Glass.
